Life in the Hot Flash Lane is a midlife blog. Launched in 2018, the blog was created as a place to speak the truth about what life is like once the kids leave home, your metabolism bottoms out and there's a 50+-year-old woman looking back at you from your bathroom mirror.

I Give You Permission

I Give You Permission

I just returned from an incredible Celebrate Your Life weekend with Liz Gilbert and Martha Beck. A weekend I shared with over 600 energetic, inspiring and courageous women who opened up their hearts in a way that I've never experienced in my life.

The light, love and happiness that filled every corner of the room was intoxicating. But we did the work. We dug deep - all of us. We opened the door and allowed our vulnerability to peek outside. Then step out into the light. And then run full on at all of the fears that hold us back from experiencing our true happiness.

One of the most powerful exercises we were given by Liz Gilbert was to write a permission slip -- to ourselves. Here's mine:

I am the principal and I give you permission to:

  • create art (without overthinking it)
  • laugh out loud
  • change your mind
  • write
  • say no
  • say yes
  • love your body just the way it is
  • cut your hair
  • not cut your hair
  • drink wine on Mondays
  • go to the store without makeup on
  • wear whatever you want
  • not answer your phone
  • stop worrying (so much)
  • do things your way
  • try new things
  • be imperfect
  • fail
  • rest
  • play
  • explore the world
  • stay in your pajamas all day
  • be happy

The Principal

I'm curious, what would your permission slip from the principal look like? I'd love to know. Give it a shot. I think you'll find that there are so many things we tell ourselves we just can't do. Share your permission note in the comments. I'm pretty sure that many of the things I listed are on your list, too.
